The Question Of Art?

Updated: Aug 7, 2023

I was thinking yesterday about the nature of worship. Does it come down to art? Where there's perfect art, there's beauty? Where there is beauty, there is transcendence? In all ancient cultures pre-religion was an art, a communication between the Gods and man, a ritual, a story, a dance. It was bringing out a catharsis, (a Greek word for release) a value, an insight. In India that idea is still alive and it's a joy to behold. The pantheon of Gods and their stories, reveal a truth about life, existence, struggle, pain, strength and hardship. These stories are alive and have existed for so long they are real, possessing power and authority, which like staring at a good piece of art, something opens inside about yourself, humanity, life, existence, whatever, a piece of truth is found.

The trouble of course is that religion knows its own power and holds the majority of people back from witnessing the truth. That's also why I like Indian culture too, because the religion is very individual. You choose your God you want to identify with. You do your own worship, whether in a Temple, at home, your husband or your wife. It's very fluid, not that structured, although having said that under the face of all that we will see that indeed Indian culture and especially religion is extremely structured and complex! And then well, it's my whole purpose and meaning behind my vocation in film and TV, to make known certain places, power spots that arise from the Earth's core, or flown in from above and nestled amongst the land and trees. Places that exist beyond the imagination are other worldly, transcendent and unknowing in their penetrative power, yet totally earth bound and tangible. I sigh a deep sigh, as this is my love, it always was and always will be, my love for them will never die.
